This month's features are Dimonique Boyd and Charlie B. Keyz.

Dimonique Boyd is a Christian, Poet, Author, Editor, and a Tee Tee. She is a Confessional Poet, writing about her very human experience with love, pain, religion, sex, and everything in between. In everything she does, her goal is to be Love.

Recording artist Charlie B. Keyz is an award winning vocalist, musician, and song writer Native to Detroit. He has a very unique sound infusing his love for Indie Soul, R&B, and also alternative rock music. Charlie is no stranger to emotion and create music that makes you think and feel every note.

This month's features are Arrie Lane and Bicq.

Arrie Lane is a mother, poet, actress, writer & director born an raised in Detroit,MI. She a presently a Finalist in the Motown Mic: the Spoken Word Competition on April 29,2021. She believes art heals and breaks down barriers. It is a creatives oxygen and greatest healing tool.

Bicq is a San Diego based songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist. When he’s not hiking or hitting the beach, bicq is tucked away in his bedroom studio cooking up new lofi beats or indie acoustic tunes.

February lineup: This month's features are Dr Traci Currie & Johnyce.

Traci is a hummingbird who dabbles in different art forms. She currently focuses her energy in writing. She runs a youth arts program in Delaware.

Johnyce was born on and raised on the Westside of Detroit MI. She started singing at just 2 years old and discovered her love and passion for music at the young age of 7 years old. Her musical inspirations include Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Jasmine Sullivan, and Beyoncé of course. Johnyce has performed on many stages and has opened for many great names such as The Jackson’s, Dru Hill, Eric Benet, Morris Day, Avery Sunshine, Vivian Green, and Maimouna Youssef (MuMu Fresh). Her latest project Stupid Girl EP is available everywhere for streaming and purchasing!

February lineup: This month's features are Kenny Watson and PEACE.

Kenny Watson, a Motor City native, is carved out of musical excellence and is equipped with the message of love for one's self and community .

He humbly garnishes the versatility of refined vocals that span across the genres of R&B, Jazz, Classical and Pop.

PEACE has been writing poetry since the age of 10, evolving to conscious rap, slam poetry and music. She is a two-time Recording Artist, two-time Grand Slam Champion, Rust Belt team finalist and NPSi group finalist who continues to move crowds with her energetic wordplay.

Poetry Vs. Monologues makes its way to Rochester College!


Free entry for Students

$5 entry for public (tickets sold at the door)

In the Auditorium at Rochester University.

 

Competition Format

9 Participants Comprised of:

4 Poets

1 Actors

1 Wild Card

 

Prizes:

One (1) Grand Prize:  $300

One (1) Consolation Prize for Favorite Actor who doesn’t win Grand Prize: $50

One (1) Consolation Prize for Favorite Poet who doesn’t win Grand Prize: $50

 

Judging:

Participants will be judged by 5 judges.

 

Participants will have a limited amount of time to present their work. The judges will then score the piece anywhere from 0.0 to 10.0, evaluating such qualities as performance, content, and originality. The high and low scores of each performance are tossed, and the middle three are added giving the performer their score. Points are deducted for violating the time limit. Top scorers advance to the next round.  Each round will be judged on a clean slate.  There will be no cumulative scoring.

 

Round 1: Three minute piece.  9 Participants will perform an original poem or monologue on any topic within the 3 minute time frame.  A ten second grace period will be allowed. Anything after the ten second grace period will result in a time deduction. Top 7 performers will advance to Round 2.

 

Round 2:  Two minute themed piece.  7 Participants will perform an original poem or monologue within the 2 minute time frame that will cover a pre-selected theme that they will be aware of in advance.  A ten second grace period will be allowed. Anything after the ten second grace period will result in a time deduction.  Top 5 performers will advance to the Final Round.

 

Round 3: Death Match 1 minute piece. 5 Participants will perform an original poem or monologue on any topic within the 1 minute time frame.  A ten second grace period will be allowed. Anything after the ten second grace period will.  One Grand Prize Winner will claim the $500 prize.

 

Consolation Prizes:  The non-winning poets will be called to the stage and presented to the audience holding numbers.  Audience will text or write one silent vote for their preferred artist.  Poet with the most votes will win a consolation prize. The process will be repeated for the non-winning actors.

Jit vs House is a Hardcore Detroit and Brian "Footwork" Green event production aimed to highlight two intricate street dance forms along with their respective musical genres of House and Techno, through selective competitive interaction, set within a party vibe atmosphere. House dance a NY based dance style has secured a firm international footprint boasting many current world-class events such as Juste Debout held in Paris and House Dance Forever in Amsterdam. The Jit, has a rich history and is considered Detroit's staple dance form that continues to evolve. These two cultural forms share a similar electronic musical past and movement that complements an exciting artistic exchange.

Competition Format

8 Participants Comprised of:

4 Jitters

4 House Dancers

 

Prizes:

One (1) Grand Prize:  $500 for winning crew (one breaker, one tricker)

One (1) Consolation Prize: $200 for second-place crew (one breaker, one tricker)

 

Judging:

Participants will be judged by 3 judges (one jitter, one hosue dancer and one combo)

Format:

Round 1: Separate battles.  

Jitting battle: Two 1x1 battles, randomly pairing dancers. Two rounds each with a 30 second limit. Judged by jitting judge.

House Dance battle: Two 1x1 battles, randomly pairing dancers. Two rounds each with a 30 second limit. Judged by breaking judge.

Final:  Crew battle.  The remaining 2 jittiers and house dancers will be randomly paired into 2 crews with 1 jitter and 1 house dancer each. Each crew will have 4 rounds of 30 seconds limits, in the following order (jit round, house round, jit round, house round). The jitting judge will select the best jitter, the house judge will select the best house dancer, and the combo judge will select the best crew.

Competition Format

16 Participants Comprised of:

8 Breakers (4 pre-Invited, 4 selected during event’s open cyphers)

8 Trickers (4 pre-Invited, 4 selected during event’s open session)

 

Prizes:

One (1) Consolation Prize: $200 for second-place crew (one breaker, one tricker)

 

Judging:

Participants will be judged by 3 judges (one breaker, one tricker and one breaker+tricker)

Format:

Prelims (3:30pm-4:30pm): one hours of open cyphers and session. Secret judges will observe and select the 4 best trickers and 4 best breakers. The space will be set up with mats for the trickers and a hardwood gym floor open space for the breakers.

Round 1: Separate battles.  

Tricking battle: Four 1x1 battles, randomly pairing 1 pre-invited tricker versus 1 session-selected tricker. Two rounds each with a 30 second limit. Judged by tricking judges.

Breaking battle: Four 1x1 battles, randomly pairing 1 pre-invited breaker versus 1 cypher-selected breaker. Two rounds each with a 30 second limit. Judged by breaking judges.

Round 2:  Crew battle.  The remaining 4 trickers and breakers will be randomly paired into 4 crew with 1 tricker and 1 breaker each. The crews will face-off randomly (2 battles). Each crew will have 4 rounds of 30 seconds limits, in the following order (tricker round, breaker round, breaker round, tricker round). The tricker judge will select the best tricker, the breaker judge will select the best breaker, and the combo judge will select the best crew.

Final:  Crew battle.  The remaining 2 crews will face off with the same format as Round 2..
